I don’t understand the idea of the “Natural Look”. There are so many ‘beauty vloggers’ - and I put that in inverted commas to express how I feel about that as a profession - on the internet, who, through video and/or written articles teach ‘normal girls’ how to achieve the ‘natural look’.
What frustrates me about the idea of the ‘natural look’ is, first and foremost, that it perpetuates the idea that girls need to make an effort to look like they haven’t made an effort. It instills in girls that they don’t look good naturally, and need to enhance their features to look good. Secondly, the amount of make-up involved in the so-called ‘natural look’ is contrary to the name itself. The tutorial videos on the internet involve a lot of naturally gorgeous girls who believe that they need to use the entire contents of their make-up case to create an illusion of natural beauty. It is a never-ending cycle.
I woke up today and I didn’t feel like putting make-up on. So I curled my eyelashes, and went about my day. While in ‘beauty guru’ terms, my face is ‘naked’ and therefore not ‘cute’, I am achieving the real natural look, almost. In real terms I have curled my eyelashes and are, therefore, not natural anymore.
See what I mean? The term ‘natural look’ should only be applied to those with no make-up and no fake tan on, and preferably no product in their hair. The Aussies rock this look, can we all, as girls, try to bring it back?
